Carrie (2026) is a new take on Stephen King's first novel that premiered on 7 October 2026. It's streaming in eight episodes on Prime Video in India and worldwide.

Carrie: What Happened Next?

Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) is forced to attend a public high school for the first time after the sudden loss of her father. Once there, she'll have to deal with her mother (Samantha Sloyan), a bullying scandal that's gone viral and shaken the entire community, the cruelties of life online, and her rapidly growing telekinetic abilities.

Mike Flanagan, the helmer of Doctor Sleep, Gerald's Game, The Life of Chuck, The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, showruns and pens Carrie. He is also directing the first and last two episodes. Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata helms the four episodes in between.

Flanagan's takes on King's works have been met with approval from the author himself. The writer/director's horror fare typically centres around families and grief.

Carrie is a limited series, meaning that one season will tell the complete story.

Clayface, the DC horror co-written by Flanagan, hit theatres this month.

Casting Carrie

Step aside, Sissy Spacek, who was Oscar-nominated for playing the iconic role in 1976, Summer H. Howell takes on the part of King's most famous character in Carrie.

Though casting a big name may seem like the obvious choice, it makes sense to go with a lesser-known face here. Part of what makes Carrie White so compelling is that she's a completely overlooked teen. It would be difficult to see her that way with a well-known star in the part.

Carrie's fanatically religious mother, Margaret White, is arguably just as iconic a character. Samantha Sloyan takes on the part, bringing with her experience as Bev Keane, one of the scariest characters Flanagan has ever put to tape, in Midnight Mass.

Rounding out the ensemble are Siena Agudong (Sue Snell), Alison Thornton (Chris Hargensen), Matthew Lillard (Principal Grayle), Amber Midthunder (Miss Desjardin), Joel Oulette (Tommy Ross), Arthur Conti (Billy Nolan), and Josie Totah (Tina Blake).

Known for Scooby-Doo and Scream, Lillard lands the role of Principal Grayle. Midthunder stars as gym teacher Miss Desjardin, and she led action flick Prey.

Scoring Carrie

The Newton Brothers (Andy Grush and Taylor Stewart) return to Flanagan's corner to pen the score for Carrie.

Known for their scores to The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, among others, Grush and Stewart's scores typically feature quiet string arrangements with long, slow builds.

Previous Adaptations of Carrie

Carrie is no stranger to the big or small screen. King's debut novel has previously been adapted three times. Brian De Palma's 1976 feature (starring Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek, both of whom earned Oscar noms for their respective roles), a 2002 TV movie, and Kimberly Peirce's 2013 take (starring Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz).

What to Expect From Carrie

Where the previous adaptations saw Carrie told in features clocking in at roughly two hours, this time around it unfolds over the course of eight episodes. This gives the story a chance to breathe in a way it never has before, diving deep into Carrie's life at home and school, as well as her burgeoning powers.

As is his hallmark, expect Flanagan's Carrie to be a character-driven affair with horror creeping in slowly. Also, where bullying was king in Carrie's source material, expect that dynamic to be updated to better reflect the times. Viral videos and cyber bullying are just a couple examples.

Finally, like every successful Carrie adaptation before it, expect Flanagan's version to firmly stand with Carrie and champion her plight.
